CampusNet – Feudalism in the academic environment is not a strange thing to encounter. An academic environment such as a campus that is considered a place to study knowledge, has the potential to give rise to a parasite called feudalism. The following is a review of feodalime in the academic environment.
Definition of Feudalism
Feudalism is a social or political system that gives great power to the aristocracy by elevating positions from merit. Feudalism is also often referred to as the poison of civilization because it can hinder the progress of society in various aspects, ranging from politics, economics, intellectuals, technology, and so on. The practice of feudalism has existed since the revolutionary movements in France and Russia. Meanwhile, in the modern world can be found in social relations between individuals and groups such as between teachers and students, bosses and employees, and students and lecturers.
Characteristics of Feudalism
According to Prof. Dr. Habib Mustopo, et al. in the book History, it is explained that the characteristics of feudalism are absolute obedience from subordinates to their superiors. Feudalism created a pyramid consisting of the king at the top, the royal nobility (aristocrats) below, after which there was a regent who ruled in a region, followed by the head of the people, and the people were in the lowest position.
Feudalism in the Academic Environment
Ironically, the practice of feudalism is not spared from the academic environment, such as the campus. The relationship between lecturers and students and the relationship between students and students in seniority is a form of feudalism practice on campus. Indeed, not all campuses have this practice. However, it is clear that this problem needs serious attention from the entire community as well as from the government.
This certainly causes losses for the students themselves because they feel as if they are silenced and do not have the freedom to express their opinions. A common phenomenon that you can also encounter is that students who want to carry out thesis proposal seminars or final hearings are required to provide snacks and lunch for lecturers or lecturers who often make it difficult for students to enter class at will depending on their mood, making it difficult for students who want guidance. Lecturers who are considered as teachers or educators who adhere to the feudal system, aka anti-criticism, think that students are not at the same level as the degree they have, for example, they have received a S3 degree or even a professor.
To overcome feudalism in the academic environment, you need to encourage a culture of participation and democracy to encourage democratic freedom, build a culture of equality, avoid discrimination, and strengthen strong campus policies.
Thus a review of feudalism in the academic environment. It should not be created in the academic environment. Especially on campus environment, due to the arrogance of anti-criticism lecturers who hinder student freedom.
