CampusNet – Types of antioxidants is so many. But this time we will explore the types of antioxidants that are most commonly used in products. Let’s read the following review right away!
Types of Antioxidants
BHA
Butylated hydroxyanisole is one of the cancer prevention agents that is insoluble in water but can be dissolved in solvents such as ethanol and methanol. The structure of BHA is reinforced by 2-tert-butyl-4-hydro-xyyanisole and 3-tert-butyl-4-hdyr-oxyanisole with a mixture of 2 phenolic isomers. Generally, BHA is used as an additive in both food and beauty products.
The dynamic part of BHA is the fragrant ring that is formed and its use is as a stabilizer. As for the research source states that BHA is a cell reinforcement whose function is very dominant in preventing cancer compared to tocopherol or vitamin E. Some products that use BHA are chewing gum, cereals, meat, butter, syrup, jelly and bread.
BHT
Butyl hydroxy toluene (BHT) is one type of antioxidant substance and has fat-soluble
has fat-soluble properties. The use of BHT is intended to maintain the situation so that it is not easily oxidized so that rancidity appears. This type of antioxidant is very strong with high inhibition. BHT is widely used in margarine, butter, and chewing gum products.
PG
Propyl gallate or propyl 3,4,5-tri-hydroxybenzoate is an ester of propanol and gallic acid. Its function is for antioxidants, inhibiting the synthesis of nucleic acids and the growth of microorganisms, and as a synthetic preservative. Propyl gallate can overcome the treatment of brain tumors, cancer, and facilitate the gastrointestinal tract.
It is insoluble in water and easy to donate hydrogen, making it very sensitive. The form of propyl gallate is white crystals with properties that are sensitive to heat. The use of propyl gallate is used in products such as sausages, oils, milk powder, and dried meat.
NDGA
NDGA is nordihydroguaiaretic acid. The function of NDGA in food products is to inhibit the decrease of quality so that quality is maintained. The use of NDGA is widely utilized for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, immunology, and aging.
Its structure is in the form of two catechol rings which provide very strong antioxidant properties and are able to counteract free radicals. Products that use NDGA such as supplements and pharmaceutical products.
