Are Women Only Seen as Tools for Sex and Childbirth?

Women’s rights and autonomy

CampusNet – For centuries, societies have reduced women to reproductive roles. Many cultural and religious beliefs reinforce the idea that a woman’s primary purpose is to serve men—whether through physical intimacy or childbirth. This belief not only undermines their identity but also limits their contributions to education, careers, and leadership.

Indonesian musician and politician Ahmad Dhani recently made a statement that sparked criticism. During a parliamentary session on the naturalization of foreign football players, he suggested that athletes over 40 should “pair” with Indonesian women to produce future national football talents. His remark objectifies women and reduces them to childbearing tools for the benefit of sports.

This statement exposes a larger issue—many still view women as reproductive instruments rather than individuals with their own aspirations. The idea that women should be assigned partners for national interest ignores their autonomy. It reinforces the belief that their worth lies in childbirth rather than intelligence, ambition, or contributions to society.

Patriarchal Control Over Women’s Bodies

Patriarchy has long controlled women’s roles, enforcing laws and social norms that limit their freedom. Arranged marriages, restrictive reproductive rights, and societal pressure to prioritize family over personal aspirations continue to oppress millions.

Even today, women face criticism when they choose not to have children or focus on their careers. Society often evaluates their worth based on their reproductive choices, disregarding their right to define their own lives.

The Objectification of Women in Media and Society

The media reinforces the idea that women exist for male pleasure. Advertisements, films, and social media often portray women’s bodies as commodities, creating unrealistic standards. This objectification fuels gender-based violence, harassment, and harmful beauty expectations.

Despite progress in gender equality, these outdated beliefs persist. To dismantle them, society must recognize women as individuals with unique identities, ambitions, and choices beyond reproduction.

Breaking the Cycle

Empowering women through education, legal rights, and leadership roles is essential for change. Women are not just caregivers or objects of desire—they are thinkers, innovators, and leaders. Recognizing their autonomy is key to achieving true equality.

It’s time to move beyond seeing women as tools for sex and childbirth. Instead, we must respect them as human beings capable of shaping their own destinies.
